What Is Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment, also called Phase I treatment, is care provided while a child is still growing and typically has a mix of baby and permanent teeth. The purpose is not to complete full orthodontic correction early, but to guide development at a stage when the jaws and facial structures are still responsive. In some cases, early evaluation allows Dr. Cui and Dr. Lin to monitor growth over time and guide jaw and airway development during important stages of growth, when certain orthopedic treatments are most effective and can help reduce the need for more invasive correction later in life.

At Cui and Lin Orthodontics, early orthodontic treatment is always individualized. In some cases, no treatment is needed beyond observation and periodic monitoring. When intervention is recommended, it is focused on supporting healthy jaw development, creating space for incoming permanent teeth, and addressing bite concerns early so they do not become more complex later in adolescence or adulthood.

When Early Orthodontic Treatment May Be Recommended

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this stage, Dr. Cui and Dr. Lin can identify early signs of developing orthodontic concerns while growth is still active and more adaptable to guidance.

Early orthodontic treatment may be recommended when we see issues such as a narrow upper jaw, crossbites, significant crowding, early loss of baby teeth, or insufficient space for permanent teeth to erupt properly. In select cases, early treatment can help reduce the risk of impacted teeth, improve bite development, and support healthier long-term dental development. In some cases, careful observation and periodic monitoring may be the most appropriate approach until the timing is ideal for treatment.

How Early Orthodontic Treatment Works

When early orthodontic treatment is needed, the approach is tailored to the specific developmental concern. One of the most commonly used appliances is a palatal expander, which gently widens the upper jaw to create space for permanent teeth and improve how the upper and lower jaws fit together.

Other appliances may include space maintainers, which preserve space after early tooth loss, or habit appliances that help address oral habits such as thumb sucking that can affect jaw development. For some patients, Invisalign First may also be used as part of Phase I care, offering a removable and comfortable option designed specifically for younger patients. Every appliance is selected based on a child’s stage of growth, comfort, and overall developmental needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Start With a Simple Early Evaluation

An early orthodontic evaluation helps determine how your child’s smile and bite are developing and whether treatment is needed now or best monitored over time. Our team is here to make the process clear, comfortable, and informative.
